I have to be honest, I completely underestimated Canberra, Australia’s capital city. I arrived expecting a quiet government town and left wondering why more people aren’t raving about it. Canberra ended up being one of the most surprising and rewarding parts of my Australia trip. What I found was a city with world‑class museums, a genuinely impressive food and wine scene, beautiful natural surroundings, and a relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere.
Where Canberra Quietly Shines
Canberra doesn’t try to compete with Sydney’s harbour or Melbourne’s energy. It quietly excels at doing its own thing – and doing it exceptionally well. For travellers who enjoy culture, wine, history, and experiences that feel more local and refined, Canberra deserves far more attention than it gets. One of the biggest surprises was just how strong Canberra’s art and cultural scene is, as well as the incredible food and wine.
The National Gallery of Australia
The National Gallery of Australia was a standout, especially the thousands of works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, representing communities from every region of Australia. The storytelling, history, and depth of the exhibitions were powerful and beautifully presented, so its not surprising that this is considered one of the most exceptional collections in the country – honestly, it feels that way when you’re standing in front of it.
Even walking through the city, you can feel how much Canberra values creativity. Public art, architecture, and thoughtfully designed spaces give the city a polished yet approachable feel. There is a large collection of sculptures, installations, murals, monuments and creative works in outdoor public spaces across Canberra.
A Meaningful Moment at the Australian War Memorial
The Australian War Memorial was one of the most impactful experiences of the trip. Within our group, one traveller from Canada and one from the United States walked together to lay a wreath – a moment that was deeply moving to witness. Seeing people from different countries united through shared history and respect made the visit feel much bigger than sightseeing. The memorial itself is exceptionally well done: emotional, educational, and thoughtfully curated without feeling commercialized. It’s an important experience for anyone visiting Canberra.
The Canberra Wine Region Is Seriously Underrated
I don’t think enough international travellers realize how good the Canberra wine region actually is…this became one of my favourite parts of the trip. This is a cool-climate wine area spanning the Australian Capital Territory and parts of New South Wales, renowned for Shiraz, Riesling, and other premium varietals. There are over 140 vineyards and more than 50 wineries within a 30-35 minute drive from Canberra! I had no idea there would be so much choice within easy reach of the city!. The wineries here also felt personal and approachable – the kind of places where you can meet the makers, and enjoy tastings without crowds or pretension.
It reminded me of what people used to love about wine touring before some regions became overly polished. For food and wine lovers, Canberra should absolutely be on the radar.
Blackwattle Alpaca Farm Was an Unexpected Standout
Getting outside the city to visit Blackwattle Alpaca Farm was another highlight. This working alpaca farm is just 30 minutes outside the city, nestles among wineries and was a unique place to learn about this luxurious fibre and the beautiful products made from it. The colours and textures of the alpaca yarns were stunning, and the rural scenery added a completely different dimension to the Canberra region. Experiences like this show just how much variety exists just beyond the Canberra city centre – something few travellers expect from Australia’s capital.

Canberra Might Just Be Your Kind of City
After my visit, I finally understood why so travellers enjoy Canberra so much. It’s a city that stands out for travellers who appreciate destinations that feel a little outside the box and experiences that feel like an authentic snapshot of Australia.
- Culture vultures who prefer a more in depth experience over big‑city chaos
- Wine lovers who value boutique experiences rather than large commercial tasting rooms
- History buffs or travellers who want meaningful ways to reflect and learn more about the history of the nation they are visiting
- Nature‑leaning travellers who like urban adventures that also offer easy access to countryside trails, wildlife and lakes
- Repeat Australia visitors looking for something refined and different
Foodie Highlights
For me, Canberra ended up being one of the most unexpectedly delicious parts of my Australia trip. It was quietly exceptional – not in a marketing way, but in a genuinely local “you‑can‑taste-where-this-came-from” way. So many of the dishes I tried featured ingredients from places I’d visited: cool‑climate wineries, truffle farms, orchards and small local producers.
Canberra also happens to do coffee exceptionally well , the kind of smooth, carefully roasted brews often associated with Melbourne, but without the lines or the attitude. Even the markets felt refreshingly local, full of growers and makers who were happy to chat about what they’d brought in that week. There was also a distinctly multicultural side to Canberra dining, due to the local diplomatic community. This gives the food scene even more depth with incredible Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern and modern fusion spots available that felt like little neighbourhood secrets rather than big‑city hotspots.
The 5 Things That Surprised Me Most in Canberra
- The Art Scene Is World‑Class – The National Gallery’s Indigenous collections and the city’s public art give Canberra a creative depth that surprises many travellers.
- The Australian War Memorial Is Deeply Moving – More than just a museum, it’s an emotional, beautifully curated experience that stays with you long after you leave.
- The Wine Region Is Exceptional – Over 50 wineries within 30–35 minutes of the city, many offering intimate tastings and cool‑climate standouts like Shiraz and Riesling.
- Nature Is Everywhere – Lakes, reserves, wildlife, and scenic drives – all woven seamlessly into the city’s layout, making it feel both urban and outdoorsy.
- Unique Rural Experiences Are Right Next Door – Places like Blackwattle Alpaca Farm show how much variety sits just beyond the city, from fibre farms to countryside wineries and farmstays.

Why Canberra Feels Refreshingly Different
Canberra is a sophisticated city without trying too hard. Creative without being chaotic. Relaxed without feeling sleepy. You get national museums and galleries, wine regions, nature reserves, cafés, local markets, and genuinely strong dining – all without the frantic pace of larger cities.
For travellers wanting a different side of Australia – one focused on culture, food, history, wine, and meaningful experiences – Canberra is absolutely worth adding to an itinerary. I left genuinely impressed, and I think most people would be too once they give it a chance.
Planning Your Perfect Canberra Stay
For most clients I think , 2–3 nights is the perfect amount of time to experience Canberra without rushing. That will give you enough space to enjoy the national museums, explore wineries, , visit the Australian War Memorial, and still have time for nature, markets, or a day trip. Here’s a quick idea of how much time I recommend and what you can expect to see:
- 2 nights – Ideal for first‑timers to see the highlights: National Gallery, War Memorial, and a taste of the city’s food scene.
- 3 nights – The sweet spot in my opinion, gives enough time to explore the Canberra Wine Region, a nature reserve, or a rural experience like Blackwattle Alpaca Farm.
- 4+ nights – Perfect for culture travellers, food and wine lovers, or anyone pairing Canberra with the South Coast or Snowy Mountains.
I think travellers are surprised by how much there is to do in and around Canberra – much more than a little capital city – you won’t regret adding this to your Australia itinerary.
