I think I may have lost count of the number of times I have travelled to the beautiful Cook Islands! This year I returned to spend a much needed break, spending time on two islands – Rarotonga and Aitutaki. I was delighted to find that little had changed since my last visit. The Cook Islands remain just as charming, peaceful and welcoming as I remembered and in spite of my many previous visits here, I am still finding new things to do that I can’t wait to share with our clients.
February was a lovely month to escape here – the warm seas, long days and soft tropical light makes everything feel like a postcard are a stark difference to the winter months at home in Canada!
Slow Mornings & Quiet Beaches
My days often began and ended with beach walks—sometimes without another soul in sight. There’s something magical about having a stretch of sand entirely to yourself, especially when the light softens at sunrise or sunset.
One of my favourite simple pleasures was sitting on a sandbar in warm, impossibly clear water. It forces you to slow down, breathe, and take in the beauty of the islands from a different perspective.
Aitutaki Adventures
Snorkelling at the southern end of the Aitutaki lagoon was a highlight—vibrant fish, calm water, and that surreal lagoon-blue and turquoise colours you can’t quite capture in photos. Afterwards, a generous buffet lunch at One Foot Island made the experience even sweeter.
An unexpected gem of the trip was a four‑hour land tour of Aitutaki. With thoughtful commentary on the island’s history and stops at scenic lookouts, it felt like a privilege to be guided by a knowledgeable and kind local resident. It added depth to the trip in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
Exploring Rarotonga
Back on Rarotonga, the local buses made it easy to explore. I wandered through the lively Punanga Nui Saturday market in the main town Avarua, visited the museum near Muri Beach, attended a church service in Arorangi, and enjoyed lunches around the island – all without needing a car.
One particularly memorable evening was a Progressive Dinner, with each course hosted in a different home. It was an absolute feast of local flavours and a rare chance to really connect with Cook Islanders through their stories, humour, and hospitality. I fully recommend this to all my clients spending time in Rarotonga, it was a wonderful experience and great way to spend an evening.
