Vancouver to Australia: Why May Is One of the Best Times for Canadians to Visit

As Canadians, we’re no strangers to long-haul travel and when you’re crossing the Pacific from Vancouver to Australia, timing matters. Choosing the right season, based on the destinations you want to see and types of activities you enjoy can make all the difference.

As an Australia travel expert, this was not my first trip Down Under. Last May I travelled to Australia and came away convinced that their autumn is a wonderful time to visit – and potentially an underrated choice that works well for Canadian visitors.

The weather was comfortable across multiple regions, visitor numbers were lower than during peak travel periods, and many of Australia’s signature experiences, from reef snorkelling to outback touring, felt particularly enjoyable at this time of year. I visited 5 very different regions of Australia on this trip:

  • Sydney (New South Wales)
  • Melbourne (Victoria)
  • Adelaide & Kangaroo Island (South Australia)
  • Ayers Rock/Uluru (Northern Territory)
  • Cairns (Queensland)

Why the month of May works so well for Canadian Travellers

One of the challenges of planning an Australian itinerary is the country’s immense size. Conditions can vary dramatically between regions, making shoulder season travel especially appealing.

By late May, Tropical North Queensland and the Northern Territory have moved away from the intense heat and humidity of the wet season. Days remain warm and sunny, while evenings are comfortable enough to enjoy being outdoors. The reduced humidity also means fewer insects and more enjoyable touring conditions.

Further south, in cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, autumn creates ideal sightseeing weather. While an extra layer is useful in the evenings, the cooler temperatures make walking tours, food experiences, and outdoor exploration much more comfortable than during Australia’s summer months.

For travellers departing Vancouver, May also arrives at a time when many Canadians are looking for a shoulder-season escape before the busy summer travel period begins at home.

Seeing Sydney Through a Different Lens

Many of my clients visiting Sydney for the first time arrive with a checklist of iconic sights in mind for their Sydney vacation package. While the Opera House and Harbour Bridge certainly deserve their reputation, some of the city’s most memorable experiences happen when you look beyond the postcard views.

May happens to coincide with Vivid Sydney Festival, an annual celebration that transforms the city through creative light installations, projection art, music, and storytelling. Rather than feeling like a tourist event, it was great to experience this event that draws locals and visitors into neighbourhoods and public spaces throughout the harbour precinct.

One evening, we viewed the festival from the water during a harbour cruise. Watching Sydney’s landmarks lit up against the night sky offered an entirely different perspective on a city that is already visually spectacular.

Melbourne: Australia’s Most Layered City

Melbourne is the place to be if you’re a serious foodie or a sports fan.

Unlike Sydney with its flashy landmarks, Melbourne reveals itself gradually through its history, neighbourhoods, architecture, and cultural identity. Some of the best time I spent there was with local guides who shared personal stories about the city’s evolution and pointed out details that many visitors would otherwise overlook.

For Canadian travellers who enjoy really exploring a destination rather than simply ticking off major destinations, this city is well worth your time and you don’t need a personal Melbourne travel guide. The laneways, historic arcades, cafés, and multicultural influences create a city that feels distinctly different from anywhere else in Australia.

The Wildlife Experience Most Visitors Don’t Expect

A short drive from Melbourne, Phillip Island offers one of Australia’s most fascinating conservation success stories. While the Penguin Parade is famous, the experience is about far more than simply watching wildlife. Learning about the work undertaken to protect and restore habitat for the Little Penguins adds important context to what visitors are seeing.

Watching hundreds of penguins emerge from the ocean at sunset and waddle back to their burrows remains one of Australia’s most unique wildlife encounters. My advice is definitely to upgrade to the Penguin Plus experience. The smaller viewing area provides a significantly better perspective and a more immersive experience overall.

Why Kangaroo Island Deserves More Time

One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is treating Kangaroo Island as a day trip. Located off the coast of South Australia, the island showcases many of the landscapes and wildlife experiences Canadian travellers hope to find in Australia, but often with far fewer crowds.

During my visit, seeing a wild koala actively climbing and feeding was a reminder that some of the best wildlife encounters happen unexpectedly. There’s something truly unique about witnessing native Australia species in their natural environment. The dramatic coastline of Flinders Chase National Park, the sculpted formations of Remarkable Rocks, the sea lion colony at Seal Bay, and the rugged beauty of Admirals Arch all deserve time to appreciate properly.

I found that flying to Kingscote and returning to Adelaide by ferry offered an efficient way to experience multiple parts of the island without retracing our route.

Understanding Uluru Beyond the Landmark

Of all the destinations I visited, Uluru left the deepest impression. Not because of its size or appearance, although both are extraordinary, but because of the cultural significance attached to the landscape.

Some of the most powerful experiences were those that centered Indigenous storytelling, providing insight into the connection between people, place, and history. Viewing Uluru through this lens transformed it from a famous landmark into a living cultural landscape.

May is particularly well suited to touring the Red Centre. Daytime temperatures are far more comfortable for outdoor activities, and the later sunrise makes early morning excursions considerably easier than during the summer months.

For Canadians accustomed to mountain scenery, the vastness and openness of Australia’s desert landscapes provide a completely different perspective on nature.

A Great Barrier Reef Experience Worth the Journey

The Great Barrier Reef is often the destination that inspires many Canadians to book their first trip to Australia. What surprised me most was the sheer diversity of colour and marine life visible within a single day on the reef. Even after years of seeing photographs, nothing compares to floating above coral gardens surrounded by tropical fish in every direction.

Travelling to the outer reef provided exceptional visibility and a rich underwater experience. Equally valuable was having access to marine experts who explained the ecology of the reef and helped us understand what we were seeing beneath the surface.

Australia’s Greatest Strength Is Its Diversity of Travel Experiences

Looking back, what stands out most is not a single destination but the incredible diversity experienced during one itinerary. Within a few weeks of leaving Vancouver, I explored world-class cities, watched penguins return from the sea, encountered native wildlife, snorkelled one of the world’s great natural wonders, and experienced Indigenous culture in Australia’s Red Centre.

For Canadian travellers seeking a destination that combines nature, wildlife, culture, and extraordinary landscapes, Australia offers a variety of experiences that are difficult to find anywhere else. Few places allow you to enjoy vibrant cities, remote outback adventures, iconic wildlife encounters, and world-famous natural wonders all in the same journey.

Based on this trip, I would confidently recommend late May as one of the smartest times to go. The weather is comfortable, the visitor numbers are lower, and many of Australia’s most iconic destinations can be enjoyed at their very best.
