When you picture the Australian Outback, what comes to mind? Endless stretches of red earth, kangaroos hopping across the frame as rugged mountain ranges expand across the background? You might think that to get the full Outback experience, you have to venture deep into the country’s less-travelled regions. But the truth is, you don’t always need to go quite so far off the beaten path to discover some of Australia’s most extraordinary landscapes.
Just a five-hour drive north of Adelaide, South Australia’s Flinders Ranges offer a taste of the Outback without the complicated journey. Here, ancient landscapes meet incredible wildlife, and scenic hiking trails lead you to some of the most breathtaking views in the country. And at the heart of it all is Wilpena Pound, one of South Australia’s most remarkable natural wonders.
Discover the Beauty of Wilpena Pound
There’s something pretty special about arriving in the Flinders Ranges. As the countryside gives way to rugged peaks, sweeping valleys and rocky landscapes, you’ll probably quickly begin to understand why this part of Australia leaves such a lasting impression on so many people.
One of the region’s biggest highlights is Ikara (Wilpena Pound), an enormous natural amphitheatre surrounded by ancient mountain ranges within Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Stretching across 17 kilometres, this incredibly beautiful geological formation has been shaped by hundreds of millions of years of geological activity. It’s also a place of deep cultural significance to the Adnyamathanha people, the Traditional Owners of the region.
Whether you’re admiring the views from a lookout, exploring the walking trails, or taking a scenic flight for a spectacular aerial view, Wilpena Pound is one of those places that photographs simply can’t do justice.
