Guided Tour - Highlights of Vietnam and Cambodia, from Hanoi to Siem Reap

14 Day Adventure

Day 1: Arrive Hanoi, Vietnam

Upon arrival at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, you will be welcomed by our driver and transferred to downtown Hanoi. Check into your hotel and refresh after a long-haul flight.

Day 2: Hanoi to Sapa – Trekking to Ma Tra & Ta Phin Village

After breakfast, you will be picked up and travel to Sapa. This route goes through amazing scenery of mountain, rivers and rice field. On arrival in Sapa, check in your hotel and meet your local guide. Later transfer 4km out of Sa Pa to Ma Tra. This valley is close to the town but very quiet and people here are still living without influence of tourism. Walk through several hamlets of the Hmong scattering on hillsides for 2 hours. Continue gradually downhill 1 hour to Ta Phin village, home to Red Dzao people. Return to Sa Pa in late afternoon.

Day 3: Sapa to Hillside Villages – Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van Villages

After breakfast, transfer to Y Linh Ho Village of Black H’mong Hill Tribe. Start your day with a walk through the town of Sapa and along a dirt trail through vegetable gardens and rice paddy terraces to see the spectacular scenery of Muong Hoa Valley. Visit the hillside Lao Chai village with a view of the valley extending and stretching to the horizon. Visit a local house, have a picnic lunch and then continue your walk following the dirt path to the next village. Ta Van is the only village in the valley inhabited by Giay minority. Transfer back to Sapa by car.

Day 4: Sapa to Hanoi

This morning you have free time in Sapa to explore the town, the town central market, the stone church or perhaps enjoy a foot massage.  Later this afternoon you will travel back to Hanoi.

Day 5: Hanoi

Discover Hanoi today, starting with Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and his house on stilts and lush garden. A short walk from the mausoleum is one of the great symbols of Hanoi, the One Pillar Pagoda, an 11th-century wooden temple built on a single stone pillar in the water. It was designed to resemble a blooming lotus. Pass by the Presidential Palace to the West Lake where you will visit Tran Quoc, one of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam, meaning “protecting the country”. Visit the venerable Temple of Literature built in 1077 – Vietnam’s first university.

In the afternoon, continue with the Museum of Ethnology where display artifacts of 54 minority groups in Vietnam. Then take a rickshaw ride around the old streets that were named after the specific goods once offered for sale at these places. Stop at Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple to learn about legend of the lake. Browse through art galleries, handicraft shops and cafes. Enjoy a Water Puppet Show, typical traditional performance created by Vietnamese wet-rice farmers in Red River Delta in 10th century.

Day 6: Hanoi to Ha Long Bay

Travel by road to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Area of outstanding natural beauty. You will travel through the rich farmlands of the Red River Delta and the landscape of rice fields and Water Buffalo.

In Ha Long bay you will board a cruise around the bay onboard a traditional style ‘Junk’. Float on beautiful emerald green waters through towering limestone islands topped with a rainforest! In the evening you will anchor in a peaceful bay for relaxing peaceful overnight stay.

Day 7: Ha Long Bay to Hoi An

Enjoy breakfast as you pass many islets named by their shapes such as Dog, Incense Urn, Fighting Cock, Finger, etc. Stop for a while to explore one of the most beautiful caves of the bay.

After disembarking this morning, drive back to Hanoi and to Noi Bai Airport for your flight to Danang. Upon arrival, meet your guide and drive to Hoi An, around 35km away.

Day 8: Hoi An

Doscover the ancient town of Hoi An on a walking tour today. You will walk around the tiny town of Hoi An with your guide to visit a 400 year old Japanese Bridge, a 300 year old Chinese temple, a 200 year old Vietnamese former merchants’ house and a local market.

There are also a large range of art galleries, souvenir and tailor shops where you can get some express made-to-order clothes if you like!

Day 9: Hoi An – Hue

Drive along the scenic coast to Hue. Stop at Hai Van pass for a panoramic view of white sand beach, blue sea and green mountains. When you arrive, visit the Imperial Citadel where Kings of Vietnam’s last feudal dynasty ruled from 1802-1945 including Flag Tower, Nine Holy Cannons, Ngo Mon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, Nine Dynastic Urns, Forbidden Purple City, etc.

In the afternoon, take a Dragonboat cruise upstream of the peaceful Perfume River (Huong River) to Thien Mu Pagoda and then visit King Tu Duc Tomb, set in an elegant garden with a magnificent lake and pavilion complex.

Day 10: Hue – Ho Chi Minh City

Drive to the airport for a flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival meet your guide and visit the War Remnants Museum, for a view of the ‘American War’ as it is known in Vietnam. Continue to the Reunification Palace, former residence of the Indochina Governor General and later President of the Republic of southern Vietnam until the fall of Saigon in 1975. The day ends with visits to Notre Dame Cathedral, the Old Post Office, one of the oldest buildings in the city, elegant Saigon Opera House and the bustling Ben Thanh Market

Day 11: Mekong Delta

Leave Ho Chi Minh City for the day to explore the Mekong Delta region today. After breakfast, drive 2 hours to Ben Tre province, crossing the Rach Mieu bridge for a panoramic view towards the sea and the four islets of Ben Tre: Long (Dragon), Lan (Unicorn), Quy (Turtle), Phung (Phoenix) gathering together, known as “Tu linh” or The Four Holy Beasts of Vietnam.

On arrival at Hung Vuong Pier, take a motorized boat on the Ben Tre River – one of the tributaries of the Mekong River.  See life on the river such as fishing and boats transferring fruits, flowers and rice to local markets. Stop at a brick kiln to see how to make bricks traditionally by printing and baking (open in summer only when there is enough sun to dry the bricks). Visit a coconut processing workshop along the canals and then travel through natural scissor creeks to a village and see some local houses. Take a Tuk-Tuk or bicycle along paths, past rice fields to get up close with real life and tropical culture on the delta.

Day 12: Ho Chi Minh City – Siem Reap

Fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia today.  On arrival at Siem Reap International Airport, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel

Day 13: Siem Reap – Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom & Other Temples

Today will be a highlight of your trip visiting the temples of Angkor.  Visit the ancient capital of Angkor Thom (12th century): the South Gate with its huge statues depicting the churning of the ocean of milk, the Bayon Temple, unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara, the Phimeanakas, the Royal Enclosure, the Elephants Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King.

Then visit Banteay Kdei and Ta Prohm, before the most famous of all the temples in the area: Angkor Wat (12th century). The temple complex covers 81 hectares (comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing). Its distinctive five towers are on the Cambodian flag and considered by art historians to be the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture. Finish your day watching the sunset from the top of Pre Rup Temple.

Day 14: Depart Siem Reap, Cambodia

Today is free time before your transfer to Siem Reap Airport for your onward flight.
