Middle Earth Adventure

21 Day Road Trip - Journey through the North & South Islands from Auckland to Queenstown

Experience otherworldly landscapes and get to know why New Zealand is the real 'Middle‑Earth'

As the country that provided incredible backdrops for some epic movies, New Zealand’s dramatic scenery, towering mountains and enchanting valleys played a key role in creating the mythical world seen in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogy movies. This 3-week road trip through the North and South Islands is designed to include a range of incredible experiences. Two of the highlights are visiting the Hobbiton Movie Set and Tour where you can see the Shire and explore the famous hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn and millhouse as well as in Wellington visiting Wētā Workshop and go behind-the-scenes to see how Middle-earth was brought to life…. but there is also so much more! While this is an incredible journey for lovers of the films and Tolkien enthusiasts, it is quite simply a stunning scenic adventure through some incredible parts of New Zealand!

TRIP ITINERARY

Journey through the North & South Islands - Auckland to Queenstown

21 Day Adventure

LOTR Inspired Highlights:

  • Hobbiton Movie Set (Near Matamata): In the heart of the North Island you can visit The Shire to explore the famous hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn and The Millhouse.
  • Mordor (Tongariro National Park) – The backdrop for Mordor is a volcanic landscape with rugged terrain and Mt. Ngauruhoe, a cone-shaped volcano that was digitally transformed into Mount Doom, the volcanic lair of Sauron in Mordor. Also Tawhai Falls in the park was the location for the ‘forbidden pool’.
  • Weta Cave (Wellington): Location of the creative hub that bought so many of the characters to life. A large portion of the set, costumes, props and computer-generated magic happened here. Learn about the processes that created much of Middle Earth and its quirky characters
  • Edoras (Canterbury): It is easy to conjure up the image of the city of Rohan rising from the top of Mount Sunday.
  • Isengard and Lothlórien (near Queenstown): This area set the scene for the stunning lake, back country and alpine landscapes. Glenorchy is a hidden gem where Gandalf rode to meet Saruman at Isengard.
