TRIP ITINERARY
Bay of Islands Tour - Auckland to Auckland
3 Day Adventure
Day 1: Auckland to Paihia, Bay of Islands
This tour departs by 7.30am, so you will need to stay the night prior in Auckland. Travel north by road to begin your journey to the Bay of Islands where there are over 140 subtropical islets off the coast that are lined with pristine, quiet beaches. The area also holds a special historical significance as it is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, between Captain William Hobson and Māori chiefs, making New Zealand a member of the Commonwealth. See the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe and a carved meeting house, just some of the Māori artefacts that characterize this part of the north coast.
Day 2: Bay of Islands
Today you have the whole day to explore this beautiful Northland region as you please. Sail on a historic tall ship, cruise to the hole in a rock, travel all the way north to the northern tip of New Zealand (Cape Reinga), discover the small town of Russell that was the country’s first permanent European settlement and retains the street names and layout from 1843.
Day 3: Bay of Islands to Auckland
Depart the Bay of Islands and travel south today, stopping in Whangarei, New Zealand’s most northerly city. This is a relaxed town where waterfalls meet beaches and galleries meet museums. Explore at your leisure – perhaps a tour to Mount Parihaka, which features a war memorial and the remains of Māori fortified settlements (excursion additional expense) – before sinking back into your seat for the trip by road back to Auckland.
