TRIP ITINERARY
Hiking Adventure - Choose from North or South Island Option
13 Day Adventure
Drive south from Rotorua to the lakeside town Taupo, in the heart of the north island and the largest lake (journey takes approximately 1 hour, 80km).
Day 8: Taupo
Today is completely at your leisure to relax or explore the lake Taupo region. Aside from the sparkling lake, you may wish to check out nearby Huka Falls or one of the many activities on offer such as golf courses, hot springs, mountain boking, walking or trout fishing.
Day 9: Taupo – Tongariro
Drive into the Tongariro National Park area (approximately 1-1.5 hours). Check into your lodge where you will spend 2 nights.
Day 10: Tongariro Alpine Crossing Hike
Option 2 – South Island Sample Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Picton or Nelson, New Zealand
Check into your accommodation for 1 night in Picton or Nelson (depending on which walk you are doing).
Days 2-4: Queen Charlotte or Abel Tasman Coastal Walk
Option 1 – Queen Charlotte Track 3 day/2 night walk (approximately 53km walking): This stunning New Zealand coastal track walk from historic Furneaux Lodge to Endeavour Inlet and Punga Grove. Walk through native bush filled with birdlife and cross a small swing bridge.
Option 2 – Abel Tasman 3 day/2 night walk: Experience the beautiful Abel Tasman coastal track from Tōtaranui to Kaiteriteri at your own pace with guides and boat back-up if you need it. Enjoy the comfort at the end of the day at two wonderful beachfront lodges.
Day 5: Picton or Nelson
Today is at leisure to explore the small towns of Picton or Nelson (depending on the walk option you choose). You may choose to visit some of New Zealand’s wine region.
Day 6: Picton or Nelson – Franz Josef
Pick up your rental car and travel across to the rugged west coast today and south to the small town on Franz Josef where you will stay for 2 nights.
Day 7: Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike
Explore the glacier up close today on an excursion that is an exhilarating helicopter ride, jaw-dropping scenery and a 2.5 hour hike through the most spectacular glacier features. You will land high up on the main ice fall of the glacier referred to by the guiding team as “the promised land”, where your guide will help you make the final preparations for your adventure. The Franz Josef Glacier is the fastest commercially guided glacier in the world? As a result, its features are constantly changing, with a good change of seeing the glacier calving around you. You might find yourself sliding through narrow crevasses, navigating between staggering ice towers, squeezing through ice caves or if you are lucky, all three!
Day 8: Franz Josef – Haast – Lake Wanaka
Drive south to Wanaka (approximately 3.5-4 hours). This road covers a diverse set of landscapes from snowcapped peaks, sandy beaches and waterfalls to lakes. Arrive in the lakeside town of Wanaka where you will stay for 2 nights.
Day 9: Wanaka Guided Walk
Today you can choose one these guided day walks: Rob Roy Glacier (8 hours), Wanaka High Country ( 6-7 hours) or Matukituki Valley for a more relaxing day walk.
Day 10: Wanaka – Queenstown
Today is a recovery day at leisure, your drive to Queenstown is relatively short (approximately 1 hour) so you have the day to relax. Check into your Queenstown hotel where you will stay 3 nights.
Day 11: Queenstown
Your day in Queenstown today is spent at your leisure. We recommend an adventurous jetboat or bungy adventure or perhaps wine tasting. This alpine resort town has plenty of adventures available.
Day 12: Routeburn Track Guided Walk, Fiordland
Spend today being guided through on one of the country’s most sought after ‘Great walks’ in the stunning Fiordland National Park region (approximately 5 hours walking, 10 hours total including travel). The Routeburn Track combines challenge with awe-inspiring scenery and native wildlife. This full day walk includes a scenic drive, walking track through beech forest weaving through meadows and alpine gardens. You will be rewarded with spectacular views and along the way learn about the flora, fauna and historic significance.
Day 13: Depart Queenstown, New Zealand
Depart today after returning your rental car.
