Guided Camping Safari - from Windhoek (Namibia) to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

14 Day Adventure

Africa Safari Tour Highlights:

Namibia: One of the oldest and driest deserts in the world, home to over 3500 plant species, unusual animals and spectacular scenery. Swakopmund is Namibia’s coastal resort town and the salt pan in Etosha National Park is so large it can be seen from space.

Botswana: The Okavango Delta, the jewel of the Kalahari is a unique wetland in northwestern Botswana with breathtaking beauty and incomparable wildlife viewing. Chobe National park is the oldest game reserve in Botswana. The Chobe River has the largest concentration of Elephants in Africa, known as ‘The Land of the Giants. and a wealth of other wild and birdlife can be seen on games drives and a river cruise.

Zimbabwe: UNESCO listed Victoria Falls is the largest curtain of falling water in the world and one of the most spectacular sights in Africa.


This itinerary travels from Windhoek to Victoria Falls, some dates travel the reverse direction from Victoria Falls to Windhoek.

Please note: This safari is recommended for healthy, active participants looking for an adventurous holiday.

 

Day 1: Arrive Windhoek, Namibia

Today is at your leisure after arrival in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city, you will meet your guide tomorrow in Sesriem.

Days 2-3: Windhoek to Sesriem and Sossusvlei (Namibia)

You will be met and transferred to our camp located on the edge of the Namib Desert. Meet your guide and rest of the group once you arrive. You will depart early the next morning for Sossusvlei, stopping in the dune belt to see the incredible changing colours of the world’s highest
sand dunes. You will take a 5km walk to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and then in the afternoon enjoy a short hike through the Sesriem Canyon.

Day 4: Sossusvlei to Swakopmund (Namibia)

Head north to the coast at Walvis Bay and enjoy lunch while watching the many flamingos feeding.  When you arrive in Swakopmund you have the afternoon and the next day to explore this colonial German town at your leisure.  You will also have the chance to book an optional excursion (additional expense). Some of the optional activities available here include dolphin cruises, scenic flights over the Namib desert.

Day 5: Swakopmund to Spitzkoppe (Namibia)

Today is at leisure until after lunch when you head to set up camp among the boulders of the Spitzkoppe Mountains. The remainder of your day is free to explore the stunning surrounding area on foot. The Spitzkoppe is known as the Matterhorn of Namibia and at almost 120 million years old this group of dramatic granite peaks, and is one of Namibia’s most recognisable landmarks.

Days 6-7: Spitzkoppe to Etosha National Park (Namibia)

Etosha National Park is one of the most important reserves in Namibia and Africa.  The distinctive feature is the giant salt pan that is believed to be over 100 million years old, covering almost 1/4 of the park. Thousands of wild animals make this region their home such as Blue Wildebeest, Elephant, Giraffe, Cheetah, Springbok, Zebra, Kudu, Leopard and Lion. After arriving in Etosha, you will take game drives late afternoon and the following day.

Day 8: Etosha to Kavango River, Rundu (Namibia)

Travel to Rundu in the northeast of Namibia where your next camp is set amongst the lush vegetation overlooking the Kavango River (also known as the Okavango River).

Days 9-10: Rundu (Namibia) to Okavango Delta (Botswana)

Today you continue into the Caprivi Strip, the panhandle of Namibia where 4 countries meet. Cross the border into Botswana and travel your next campsite located on the edge of the Okavango Delta. The unique part of Africa is the largest inland delta in the world, located in the Kalahari Desert is a sanctuary for the senses, and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The following day you will embark on adventures in mokoro (canoe) & boat excursions through the channels of the Nxamasire area of the delta. Game walks are also done on the smaller islands in the area subject to the water levels of the delta.

Days 11-12: Okavango to Chobe River

Travel through the Caprivi Strip in Namibia and cross back into Botswana via the Chobe National Park. Overnight on the banks of the Chobe River, an area famous for its scenery, magnificent sunsets, abundance of wildlife and paradise for bird lovers. Chobe National Park has an huge population of over 70,000 Kalahari elephants. Large herds are most visible during the dry season (April to October). The next day explore Chobe on a morning game drive followed by a sunset game-viewing cruise on the Chobe River.

Day 13: Chobe (Botswana) to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

After breakfast, travel across the border to Zimbabwe and on to Victoria Falls (also know as Mosi-oa-Tunya).  This UNESCO listed area is the largest curtain of falling water in the world and one of the most spectacular sights in Africa.  On arrival, you will have the rest of the day at leisure to check out local markets or choose from one of the many optional activities on offer in the adrenalin capital of Africa.  This includes rafting, bungy jumping, scenic flights over the falls and visiting the falls (optional excursions additional expense).

Day 14: Depart Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

Today your overland camping adventure through Africa concludes after breakfast.  You will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.

Rainy season for Namibia and Botswana.

Hot and humid days with some bright/sunny days and others grey & wet with cooling afternoon thunderstorms.

This season is colorful and lush with clear blue skies.

Expect moderate day temps with game starting to concentrate around permanent water as pans start to dry out.

No rain with crisp, clear days around 25°C degrees and night temperatures 0-10°C.

Excellent game viewing and migratory birds start arriving in August. The best time for a safari!

The driest month of the year with daily temperatures 30°C+.

Excellent time for big game safaris.

Hot days with the start of the wet season bringing afternoon African thunderstorms.

This is calving season and good game viewing with many migrant birds present.
