Sample Costa Rica Itinerary (Subject to change)

Please Note: This sample itinerary starts/finishes in San Jose, if you want to fly into Tomas Guardia International Airport please contact our team to customize a Costa Rica trip for you to start/finish in Liberia instead.

Day 1: Arrive San José, Costa Rica

Welcome to Costa Rica, on arrival at San Jose Juan Santamaria International Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

San José is the capital city located in the central valley area of Costa Rica.  Here you can find world-class museums, friendly locals, parks, hotels, bustling nightlife, theatres, historic architecture and friendly locals.  It is a gateway to many other areas of Costa Rica including many national parks, mountains and beaches.

Day 2: San José – Poas National Park & Laguna Hule – Arenal

Transfer to La Fortuna today travelling via Poas Volcano and Hule Lagoon (Approximately 6 hours / 165km). Pass through towns such as Poasito or Fraijanes on the way to Poás Volcano National Park, renowned as one of the largest geysers in the world.  On a clear day you can have the opportunity to see the main crater of the Poás volcano. Continue to the town of Pata de Gallo where the impressive Laguna Hule is known for its vast area and a great scenic beauty. Enjoy lunch with a panoramic view of the Laguna Hule before continuing to La Fortuna.

Day 3: Arenal

Your adventure today includes hiking the trails of Arenal Volcano National Park, including the tropical forest and areas once devastated by the volcano including the impact craters and lava flows of 1992.  At the end of your hike, travel to Paradise Hot Springs to relax and enjoy the different thermal pools.

Day 4: Arenal – Monteverde

Transfer by boat across Arenal Lake to Monteverde (approx. 3 hours total). This man made lake is the largest and most important lake in Costa Rica, created to provide hydroelectric energy for the country. It is also a good place to see resident and migratory birds, monkeys and sloths as well as enjoy views of Arenal Volcano on a clear day. Costa Rica is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, with 4% of all known species of plants and animals in just 0.04% the earth’s surface.

Day 5: Monteverde

Monteverde is one of the richest regions in the country where there are 3,021 known species including a total of 755 species of trees. Today you visit this beautiful area, starting with a guided forest Selvatura Canopy adventure along high treetop walkways and 8 suspension bridges for approx 1.9km of trails. This is the longest, safest and strongest bridge system in Costa Rica. Finish with a guided journey through one of the largest butterfly gardens in America, a giant tropical dome that hosts more than 50 species of butterflies from various regions of Costa Rica.

Day 6: Monteverde – Tamarindo Beach

Transfer from Monteverde to Tamarindo Beach today in the northern province of Guanacoste (approx. 3.5 hours / 162km). Tamarindo Beach, located on the Pacific coast, is part of Las Baulas National Park.

Day 7: Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste

Today is at your leisure to relax and spend the day doing as much or as little as you please.  This area has a dry climate, clear waters, lush vegetation and a leisurely lifestyle. Many visitors learn to surf while here as the long sandy beaches and warm waters are an excellent environment for beginner surfers. Places of interest here include Las Baulas Marine National Park, Avellanas Beach, Tamarindo Estuary, Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course.

Day 8: Tamarindo Beach – San José

Today is at your leisure until your transfer from Tamarindo to San Jose (approx. 5 hours / 200km).
Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9: Depart San José, Costa Rica

Today your vacation ends with a private transfer to San Jose International Airport (approx. 30mins) for your onward flight (not included).
Meals included: Breakfast
