Sample Costa Rica Itinerary (Subject to change):

Please Note: This sample itinerary starts/finishes in San Jose, if you want to fly into Tomas Guardia International Airport please contact our team to customize a Costa Rica trip for you to start/finish in Liberia instead.

Day 1: San José to La Fortuna

Welcome to Costa Rica! Today you will be met at the airport and transferred to La Fortuna (approximately 3 hours). The Arenal area is where Arenal Volcano is located, as well as Arenal Lake, La Fortuna Waterfall and hot springs. Thrillseekers and nature lovers will love the range of adventures found here.

Day 2: La Fortuna

Today you will take a private guided hike around the Arenal Volcano area to see a great variety of flora and fauna species, the impacted craters and the lava slides of 1992. On clear days, you can enjoy incredible views of the impressive Arenal Volcano, Arenal lake, the Tilaran mountain range, and Cerro Chato. Start your tour to Arenal National Park and volcano by heading to the El Silencio Private Reserve, getting as close as possible to the base of the Volcano. you will embark on a 1km hike along a volcanic stone path with a moderate level of difficulty until you reach the viewpoint which is the closest permitted point to the volcano. At the end of the hike, transfer to The Springs to relax and enjoy the different pools and mineral waters. Later you will be transferred back to your hotel in La Fortuna.

Day 3: La Fortuna

Today you will head to Mistico Hanging Bridges located along the migration path of birds.The trails and bridges will bring you close to the birds, flowers and lush vegetation of the primary rainforest. This is a 250 ha. forest property made of paths and bridges and also has impressive views of the Arenal Volcano and the lake that feeds the largest hydroelectric plant in Costa Rica. Your walk is a fun educational way to learn more about the forest and the local environment and get up close with nature.

Day 4: La Fortuna – Bajos Del Toro

Transfer by private vehicle to Bajos del Torro (approximately 2 hours). Nestled in Costa Rica’s central highlands, El Silencio Lodge & Spa is a sophisticated eco-lodge that is a gateway to the pristine tropical cloud forest. Suites offer mountain or river views and have a private outdoor heated whirlpool. The restaurant focuses on local cuisine made with ingredients sourced from its organic mini farm. Esencia Spa is a wellness sanctuary where you can enjoy the best of locally sourced natural healing ingredients in luxurious surroundings.

Days 5-6: Bajos del Toro

Your time here is at your leisure to enjoy the Bajos del Toro Amarillo area.  This small quiet rural town in the province of Alajuela is where you can experience the incredible Cloud Forest and the quiet, green mountainous landscapes, crystal clear rivers and uncrowded trails. It is also a place to experience authentic culture and lifestyle where agriculture and farming is common. You may choose to explore Agrio River Waterfall, Del Toro Waterfall, Hidden Treasure waterfall or Juan Castro National Park.

Day 7: Bajos del Toro – Turrialba

Transfer by road to Siquirres (approximately 2.5 hours) where you will get further off the beaten track and travel into your lodge by rafting the river (approximately 2.5 hours).

Pacuare Lodge is a unique wilderness lodge that combines nature, warm hospitality and conservation You will enjoy the sustainably constructed standalone rooms and the sounds of the rainforest that creates a blissful restful experience located on the banks of the Pacuare River. The Turrialba region is known worldwide for its rafting, and is also inhabited by an important indigenous group (Cabecar) with more than 250 archaeological sites and objects used by ancestors.

Day 8: Pacuare

Today is at your leisure to choose from included activities from the daily schedule at your lodge such as canopy tour, canyoning, birdwatching, waterfall hike, Cabecar indigenous hike, rural experience sustainability tour or The Loop naturalist and cultural walk. The lodge also has other activities available at at additional cost.

Day 9: Turrialba to San José

Depart via the Pacuare River by raft (approximately 4 hours), then take a private transfer from Siquirres to your boutique hotel in the heart San José (approximately 2.5 hours, 100km). The Hotel Grano de Oro is a converted former tropical Victorian mansion that combines the comfort of home with the amenities of a luxury hotel.

Day 10: San José to Golfito Dulce

Travel south today, take a private transfer to the domestic terminal and fly to Golfito (approx. 1 hr flight).  On arrival in Golfito you will take a scenic boat ride to get to your lodge in the heart of the rainforest in Golfo Dulce on the Osa Peninsula (approx. 45 mins).

Days 11-12: Golfo Dulce

Golfo Dulce on the Pacific Coast is a site of biological importance as it borders protected areas such as Corcovado and the Piedras Blancas National Parks. Your days here are free to explore the area as you wish.

Playa Cativo Eco Lodge is a boutique hideaway in a stunning location on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.  This hidden gem with just 18 rooms is set amongst lush vegetation, exotic wildlife and a private beach.  This is a wonderful place to relax and unwind while surrounded by some of the most unspoiled and diverse rainforests in the world. This is a strikingly beautiful setting to bask in the peace, walk along the secluded beach, enjoy the calm ocean waters and feel the fresh forest breeze. During your stay you have access to kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, snorkeling equipment, morning mindful movement sessions, A guided introduction to the rainforest (1.5 hours) and access to hiking trails in the Golfo Dulce nature reserve.

Day 13: Golfo Dulce to San José, Depart Costa Rica

Depart your ecolodge today by boat transfer from Golfo Dulce to Golfito (approx. 45 mins) where you will take a flight from Golfito to San José (approx. 1 hr flight).  On arrival, you will have a private transfer from the domestic terminal to Juan Santamaria International Airport for your departure flight from Costa Rica.
