Costa Rica has one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world, including over 900 species of birds, making it paradise for avian enthusiasts, ornithologists, listers, twitchers, dudes, proto birders of all ages. Birding is possible all year, however the best seasons are during migration periods: Autumn migration from North to South America is August to December and Winter migration when birds return north is from January to May.

TRIP ITINERARY

13 Day Adventure
Day 1: Arrive San José, Costa Rica
On arrival in Costa Rica you will be met at the airport and transferred to Heredia. This town is known as ‘the city of flowers)
Day 2: Heredia to San Gerardo de Dota
Pick up your rental car and drive to San Gerardo de Dota in the central valley (approximately 2.5 hours, 100km).

Day 3: Birdwatching in San Gerardo de Dota
This area is part of the cloud forest and has a rich diverse flora and fauna. It is recommended for birdwatcher’s and the bird list in San Gerardo de Dota has more than 170 species, some are endemic to the zone. Mornings, just after dawn, are the best time for seeing most species. You walk along trails where you can find the most elusive species (trophies for birders who want to increase their life list) including the Quetzal, one of the most beautiful and popular species in the highlands.

Day 4: San Gerardo de Dota to Turrialba
Drive to Turrialba, a small town in the province of Cartago (approximately 3.5 hours, 126 km). This is a beautiful rural agricultural area with sugar cane, coffee and corn plantations as well as attractions such as the Pacuare River, Turrialba Volcano and Guayabo National Monument.

Day 5: Birdwatching in Turrialba
The forest in this area is home to a wealth of bird species, from Tanagers to Toucans and Manakins to Antbirds and Woodcreepers. The garden at your lodge has fruit feeders that attract a variety of birds including Lessons Motmots, Montezuma, Chestnut-headed Oropendolas, Grey-headed Chachalacas, Baltimore Orioles, several kinds of Euphonias and Tanagers. There are also Hummingbird feeders that attract many species of hummingbirds. The Snowcap is a frequent visitor to the Verbena hedges along with the Black-crested Coquette, the Violet-headed Hummingbird and the Garden Emerald.

Day 6: Turrialba to Selva Bananito
Drive to Salón Delia in Cahuita where you will take a coach transfer to Selva Bananito on the Costa Rican Caribbean (approximately 3.5 hours, 140km). This is a small coastal town with beautiful landscapes and tranquil unspoiled sites.

Day 7: Birdwatching in Selva Bananito
Depart early morning for an unforgettable trip to spot some of the 300 species of birds that have been identified at your lodge. Led by knowledgeable ornithologists, scout trees and pastures for Toucans, Orioles, Trogons, Kingfishers and many more bird species!

Day 8: Selva Bananito to Sarapiqui
Transfer to Salón Delia, pick up your car and drive to Sarapiquí (approximately 3.5 hours, 172 km).

Day 9: Birdwatching Sarapiqui
Join a naturalist guide for an early morning bird walk on the grounds of your lodge to spot birds when they are active. You can sight several stunning tropical species that inhabit this beautiful property, every day is different!

Day 10: Sarapiqui to Boca Tapada
Drive to Boca Tapada, one of the wonderful corners on the northern region of Costa Rica in the province of Alajuela bordering Nicaragua (approximately 1.5 hours, 60km). Here you can find lush vegetation, grasslands, green mountains, lagoons and the habitat of many animals.

Day 11: Birdwatching Boca Tapada
The lowland tropical rainforest and wetlands of the northern plains are one of the most prolific sites for birdwatching in Costa Rica. More than 410 species of birds have been identified in the area, including the endangered Great Green Macaws and the Scarlet Macaws, as well as Maquenque are Toucans, Oropendolas, Honeycreepers, Tanagers, Chestnut-bellied Herons, Muscovy Ducks, Great Curassows, Jabirus, Roseate Spoonbills, Green Ibis and Sunbitterns.
You will also enjoy the unique silence of the “Tres Amigos River” floating slowly and silently on the river is a great opportunity to focus on nature and discover this ecosystem’s plants and animals with a naturalist guide.

Day 12: Boca Tapada to Heredia
Drive to Heredia today where you will return your rental vehicle (approximately 3 hours, 145km).

Day 13: Heredia to San José, Depart Costa Rica
Today is at your leisure before your private transfer to San José International Airport to depart Costa Rica.
