Botswana Camping Safari - from Victoria Falls to Johannesburg

12 Day Adventure

Africa Safari Tour Highlights:

  • Zimbabwe: UNESCO World Heritage Site Victoria Falls is the largest single sheet of falling water in the world.
  • Botswana: Explore wildlife sanctuaries in Botswana including Chobe and Moremi Reserves, Khama Rhino Sanctuary.
  • South Africa: Discover Mapungubwe National Park, known for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed cultural sites with Bushman Paintings and also home to elephants, leopards and an abundance of birdlife with a stunning backdrop of forests, cliffs and rivers.

Day 1: Arrive Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Welcome to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe – one of the most spectacular natural sights in Africa and the world. Also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, it is easy to see how this is one of the UNESCO listed seven natural wonders of the world with its scale, power and beauty. Your afternoon is at your leisure to explore the area, perhaps browse local markets or choose one of the optional activities on offer in the adrenalin capital of Africa (activities additional expense).

Day 2: Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) to Chobe National Park (Botswana)

Your morning is free to choose an activity in Victoria Falls or to explore the town. Departing after lunch and cross the border to Botswana and your campsite on the banks of the Chobe RiverChobe National Park and the Chobe River, are key watering spots for wildlife especially in dry season May-Oct.  This was Botswana’s first national park is its most biologically diverse. The region is renowned for its scenery, epic sunsets and concentration of birdlife and wildlife including large herds of Elephants, Giraffe, Antelope and Buffalo.

Day 3: Chobe River

This morning is free for an optional game drive (additional expense) in Chobe National Park. Late afternoon, enjoy a relaxing game viewing boat cruise on the Chobe River. 

Day 4: Chobe River to Savute (Botswana)

Change to 4×4 vehicles and depart Chobe River for a game drive through the Chobe National Park to the Savute area.  The remote corner of Chobe National Park is renowned for its big game viewing and large prides of lions and amazing wildlife. Spend the afternoon on game drives in the area.

Days 5-6: Savute to Moremi Wildlife Reserve (Botswana)

Travel through Savute to the Mababe area bordering Moremi Game Reserve. This is a pure  wilderness area of great beauty, with rich green vegetation, palm trees, teeming with birdlife and a vast population of wild animals. Enjoy early morning and late afternoon 4×4 game drives in the private concession in the Khwai area of Moremi.

Day 7: Moremi to Maun (Botswana)

Travel through Botswana to Maun where you will overnight. This town is known as the gateway to the Okavango Delta and a is a Botswana tourism hub.

Day 8: Maun to Khama Rhino Sanctuary (Botswana)

Travel along the western edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans arriving in Khama Rhino Sanctuary in the late afternoon. This community based wildlife project was established to assist in saving the vanishing rhinoceros, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community. Covering approximately 8585 hectares, the sanctuary provides a habitat for white and black rhino, over 30 other animal species and more than 230 species of birds.

Day 9: Khama to Mapungubwe National Park (South Africa)

Early this morning (6am) you have the option to take on a 2-hour game drive in search of the many white rhino inhabiting Khama Rhino Sanctuary (additional expense). Travel towards the Botswana border crossing the Limpopo River into South Africa. Set up camp in the bush near the Limpopo River. Mapungubwe National Park and Mapungubwe Hill is the centre of the World Heritage-Listed landscape where the first southern African kingdom was established in the 13th Century and San rock art sites were discovered 350 years ago.

Day 10: Mapungubwe National Park

Enjoy a morning walk to view the Kaoxa Bushman paintings that are well-preserved due to the San people’s practice of rubbing animal fat into the rock after painting which helped the color penetrate the surface. Then enjoy a sunset drive with spectacular views over the Baobab laden savannah landscape.

Day 11: Mapungubwe to Johannesburg

Travel by road today through Limpopo, the northernmost province in South Africa known for its incredible wildlife to Johannesburg where you will overnight. This is the largest city in South Africa full of hidden treasures. It has rich cultural diversity and is a great place to learn about history, enjoy the thriving arts scene and cafe culture.

Day 12: Depart Johannesburg (South Africa)

Depart Johannesburg today, transfer to the Airport where your safari trip comes to an end.

Days are hot and humid,  some are bright/sunny and other days grey & wet with cooling afternoon thunderstorms.

This season is colorful and lush with clear blue skies.

Expect moderate day temps with game starting to concentrate around permanent water as pans start to dry out.

No rain with crisp, clear days around 25°C degrees and night temperatures 0-10°C.

Excellent game viewing and migratory birds start arriving in August. The best time for a safari!

The driest month of the year with daily temperatures 30°C+.

Excellent time for big game safaris.

Hot days with the start of the wet season bringing afternoon African thunderstorms.

This is calving season and good game viewing with many migrant birds present.
