Sample South Africa driving itinerary:
Day 1: Cape Town – Oudtshoorn
On arrival at Cape Town International Airport, collect your rental vehicle and your adventure begins. Drive to your accommodation in Oudtshoorn, an area well-known for its ostrich farming and the Cango Caves. The rest of the afternoon is spent at your leisure.
Days 2-3: Oudtshoorn to Krysna
After breakfast, we recommend exploring the historical Klein Karoo at your own pace. The Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) is a spectacular 350km long valley that is surrounded by mountains. This area is one of the richest and most diverse succulent habitats in the world, in southern Africa there are more than 5000 species of succulents.
You can also choose to visit Ostrich Show Farm to learn about the history and use of these unique birds. You could also popular Cango Caves, located just 29-kilometers outside of Oudtshoorn. These caves are over 4km long and made up of an extensive network of subterranean tunnels and chambers.
The next day, drive along South Africa’s southern coastline, known as the Garden Route to Knysna. You may also choose to take a trip to nearby Monkeyland, to take a monkey safari in the forest and learn about these fascinating creatures, ranging from the Gibbons of Asia to the Lemurs of Madagascar. Next door is Birds of Eden, a free flight bird sanctuary, complete with a canopy walk, mysterious ruin and walk behind waterfall. The main attraction is the 220 species of birds that inhabit the aviary.
Knysna is known for its warm-water estuary that passes between Knysna Heads. At the heads stop at the lookout or enjoy a meal at restaurants with stunning coastal views. Knysna’s indigenous forests, fynbos, lakes, rivers and mountains, combined with a temperate climate, makes this area a natural Garden of Eden. Driving distance approx. 164km.
Day 4: Krysna to Tsitsikamma
Continue your journey along the Garden route via Plettenberg Bay, where you can stop and relax at a stunning beach before making your way towards the Tsitsikamma Forest. The region of Tsitsikamma is a highlight on a South African safari, with its protected forest that contains an amazing array of vegetation. he word Tsitsikamma means ‘place of much water’. Explore the coastal bush and rocky shoreline and if you are more adventurous plunge off the world’s highest bungee jump at the Bloukrans River. Approximate distance travelled: 95km.
Day 5: Tsitsikamma to Port Elizabeth
Depart Tsitsikamma and drive along the costal shoreline at your own pace taking your time. Port Elizabeth is situated in the Eastern Cape Province and one of the largest cities in South Africa also known as ‘the friendly city’. On arrival you can spend your afternoon at the beach. Approximate distance travelled: 184km
Day 6: Depart Port Elizabeth, South Africa
After breakfast, head to Port Elizabeth Airport to drop off your rental car in time for your departure flight.
